Chocolate Almond Toffee

    Ingredients

    1 cup packed brown sugar
    1 cup sugar
    1/3 cup white corn syrup
    1/8 tsp. salt
    1/3 cup butter
    1 6-oz. package semisweet chocolate, melted
    1/2 cup toasted almonds, chopped

    Directions

    Combine sugars, syrup, water and salt in heavy
    saucepan;  blend thoroughly.  Place over medium
    heat.  Stir until sugar is dissolved and mixture is
    boiling moderately.  Cook to firm-ball stage or 245
    degrees.  Add butter; cook to hard-crack stage or
    290 degrees.  
    Pour into lightly oiled 9 x 9-inch pan.  Cool until
    hard and brittle.  Spread with half the melted
    chocolate; top with half the almonds.  
    Cool until chocolate is set.
    Loosen; turn out and spread other side with
    remaining chocolate and almonds.
    Break into pieces.
