    Allspice Date Coffee Cake

    Ingredients

    2 cups flour
    3 tsp. baking powder
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1/3 cup shortening
    1/2 cup light brown sugar
    1 1/4 tsp. ground allspice
    2 large eggs
    1 cup diced, pitted dates
    3/4 cup milk
    Topping:
    3 Tbsp. sugar
    2 tsp. grated orange rind
    1 tsp. grated lemon rind
    1/4 cup finely chopped nuts

    Directions

    Sift together first 3 ingredients and set aside.  Mix
    shortening with brown sugar and allspice until
    fluffy.  Beat in eggs.  Stir in dates.  Add flour
    mixture alternately with milk.  Turn into a greased
    lightly floured 9-inch pan.  Mix last 4 ingredients
    together and sprinkle over the top.  
    Bake at 375 degrees for 40 minutes.
    Cool pan on wire rack for 10 minutes.
    Turn out of pan onto rack to finish cooling.
    Serve warm.
