Orange Glaze Cake
1 cup butter 2 cups sugar 4 eggs, separated 2 Tbsp. orange rind 1 tsp. soda 1 1/3 cups buttermilk 4 cups flour 1 pkg. dates 1 cup nuts Sauce: 3 cups sugar 1 1/2 cups orange juice 2 Tbsp. orange rind 1 tsp. lemon juice Directions Cream butter and sugar. Add egg yolks and beat. Add buttermilk and flour alternately, saving 1/2 cup flour to dredge dates and nuts. Add them with orange rind. Beat egg whites until very stiff. Fold into cake mixture. Bake at 300 for 1 1/2 - 2 hours. To make sauce - heat sugar, orange juice, orange rind and lemon juice just long enough to melt sugar. Do not boil! Remove cake from oven and while hot, pour sauce over. Set to cool. Remove cake from tube. |
